For people who have heartburn two or more times a week, Prilosec OTC contains omeprazole 20mg, a proton pump inhibitor taken once daily. Each pack contains 14 tablets, one per day. Take one tablet in the morning before eating; it works over 24 hours. Unlike antacids that neutralise acid after it forms, omeprazole reduces acid production in the stomach.
This is the over-the-counter strength of prescription omeprazole. Follow package directions and do not exceed recommended dose. Not for immediate relief of heartburn; allow one to four days for full effect.
